Why?

The business case for sustainability is not just philanthropic anymore, but a requirement from investors and customers.

Cotton accounts for almost 40% of global textile production and supports an estimated 250 million livelihoods.

Yet only 12% of the world’s cotton is classed as more sustainable, and significant agronomic
and social challenges exist across global cotton communities.

Cotton is a labour and environmentally intensive crop grown in dry regions, and prone to disease. Cotton communities are subsistence economies with limited worker protection, limited education and women’s rights.

We can support you

Address risks and build resilience

1. PRODUCTIVITY AND CLIMATE CHANGE:

•  By increasing productivity through improved yields, farmer income & profitability and access to technology. Enabling climate change adaptation and reducing impact on natural capital through better crop rotation practices, reduction in chemicals, soil health and nutrient management and biodiversity conservation.

2. HUMAN RIGHTS AND MODERN SLAVERY:

•  By protecting your workforce - 70% of which are likely to be women - and considering livelihoods, equality, health and safety. Ensuring decent working conditions including no child labour and gender inclusion.

3. REPUTATION:

•  Knowing and optimising your supply chain through improved traceability and verification so that cotton is produced with respect for Human Rights principles and the environment.

Source more sustainable cotton

Consumers expect companies to be an active participant, if not a driving force, in solving social and environmental issues in the supply chain. Although the supply of more sustainable cotton is growing. global uptake is still at less than 13%. Brands and retailers, as well as farmers, are missing out. Climate change and competition for land use for food, fibre and fuel can lead to scarcity of supply in the future.

1. CottonConnect offers greater transparency and traceability across the supply chain. We support you internally and throughout the supply chain to source more sustainable cotton.

2. CottonConnect works on programmes to address gender inequality, welfare and human rights. We support you in identifying and addressing any risks in your supply chain.

3. By working with CottonConnect brands can demonstrate they are taking responsibility and action, managing your reputational risk.

Achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals

Retailers and brands are aligning sustainability strategies to the 2015 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The work of CottonConnect is structured to support these needs:

1. Connecting retailers and the cotton industry with a supply chain involving millions of worker livelihoods and promoting more sustainable cotton to reach goals of no poverty, no hunger, good health & wellbeing, gender equality and decent work.

2. Farmer training programmes and support for organic farming that helps the environment and addresses climate action, life on land and water management.

3. Creating linked partnerships between governments, the private sector and civil society with a shared goal of sustainability across the global textile industry.
